Mumbai based service provider Jio offers many services in India like the digital services, 4G internet, broadband services and mobile telephony. Previously it was called the Infotel Broadband Services Ltd offers 4G services using the LTE technology. The telecom service, the Reliance Industries Limited was incorporated in the year 2007. On the eve of the eighty third birthday of the founder of the Reliance Industries, Dhirubhai Ambani, the services were beta launched to all the employees and partners of Jio. The 4G service was commercially launched on September 5th, 2016.
Google Play store is filled with Jio apps
The announcement of the 4G data and voice service, the apps offered by Reliance Jio are scoring more popularity among the apps in the Google store. The data show that the Jio apps have pulled down the social media network, Facebook and the popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp.
A survey shows that in the top 10 apps that were recently downloaded from the Google Play store, WhatsApp ranks third position and Facebook ranks twelfth position, but about seven of the apps are from the Jio app family. And the top scoring app in the Play store is MyJio and JioCinema. MyJio is the app that is used to manage the Jio accounts and the digital services that are associated with the service. The fourth to seventh positions are bagged by JioTV, Jionet, JioJoin and Jio music; JioMags holds the tenth spot in the Play store. While many of the Jio apps have crossed 1 million downloads, the MyJio app has bagged with ten million downloads.
Therefore, twelve in top twenty and eleven in top fifteen apps that were downloaded from the Google Play store are from the Jio apps. The company has also launched their online shopping app called AJIO that offers more than two hundred brands from the Indian and International market. The store consists of a large variety of collections from accessories to jewelry to clothes. The company announced that the domestic calls made by the customers will be free and the data plan will also be at an affordable cost for the users like each MB costs five paise or one GB for fifty rupees and depending on the usage of the data by the customers the price can be decreased to twenty five rupees per GB.
Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd
The Reliance Industries Ltd bought ninety six percent of the stake in June 2010 in the IBSL (Infotel Broadband Service Limited) for about four thousand eight hundred crores and the IBSL was the only service provider to gain the broadband spectrum in twenty two zones in the country in the 4G service auction that took place at the beginning of the year. In January 2013, the IBSL that was a telecom subsidiary of the Reliance Industries Ltd was renamed as a Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL).
Development of the Jio service
The company announced that they will start their service operation all over India by the end of 2015, but by October 2015 they announced that they will postpone the launch of the first quarter of the financial year of 2016-17. An NGO called the Centre for Public InterestLitigation filed a PIL in the Supreme Court challenging the grant of the pan India license to Jio by the government. The PIL alleged that Jiowas supposed to offer voice telephony service along with the 4G service by paying extra fees of Rs.165.8 crore that was unreasonable and arbitrary and the exchequer had a loss of Rs. 2284.2 crore. The DOT (Department of Telecom) of India refuted all the CAG claims and explained that the rules for the 3G and the BWA spectrum did not restrict the BWA from offering the voice telephony. Therefore, the PIL revoked and the accusations were dismissed.
The Beta launch: On December 27th, 2015 the 4G service was offered to the Staffs, partners and their families under the Jio services. The brand ambassador for the Jio service is Shah Rukh Khan, the Indian actor and the launch event took place in the Reliance Corporate Park in Navi Mumbai. Many famous celebrities of the country like the musician A R Rahman, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and actors Javed Jaffer and Ranbir Kapoor were also present at the launch ceremony. This event was witnessed by thirty five thousand employees of the Reliance Industries Ltd in which some of them were connected virtually from hundred locations that includes people from Dallas, US.
The Commercial launch: On September 5th, 2016 the company launched its commercial service.
Partnership: Jio signed a treaty with BSNL in September 2016 for the intra circle roaming that would allow the users of the operators to exchange the 4G and 3G spectrum of each other in the roaming mode.
Issues with the Functionary: The TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) summoned Jio in September 2016 and the other operators in the country like Idea Celluar, Vodafone and Bharti Airtel met at a conference and discussed about the issues regarding the interconnection of the services among the operators. Later Jio complained to the TRAI that all the other operators were not honoring the commercial agreement and also said that the other operators are trying to sabotage their entry in the telecom market. But DoT dismissed the request and ordered TRAI to resolve the disputes among the operators and the COAI requested the TRAI to include all the operators of the country in the discussion instead only including three operators. Earlier the functionaries approached the PMO of the country to reiterate their stance, stating that they should not accept the request of Jio for the interconnection of the operators. On hearing this, the owner of Jio Mukesh Ambani said that all the operators accepted the MNP and interconnection, and also said that those are reputed companies and will not violate any laws.
Idea Cellular, on September 12th, 2016 accepted the commercial agreement of Jio by allowing Jio to make use of its one hundred and ninety six interconnection points in the country.
Products and Services of Jio
LYF Smartphones: The Company partnered with the domestic handset maker Index in June 2015 to offer handsets with 4G service and voice over LTE option. According to this plan, the company plans to offer high speed internet service using the fiber network and 4G voice calling service. But in October 2015, the company announced that they will launch their own customized handsets under the brand name of LYF. The company launched their first handset on January 25th, 2016 and the name of the handheld device is Water 1. Later the company released three other mobile models like Water 2, Flame 1 and Earth 1. These handheld devices are available at their customized electronic stores, the Reliance Retail.
Jio apps: The Company launched a range of multimedia apps in May 2016 on the Google Play and it is a part of the 4G service. Even though the apps can be downloaded by all the consumers they cannot access the apps without a Jio SIM card and the apps are in their beta phase. Some of the apps are MyJio, JioCinema, JioChat Messenger, JioMusic, JioSecurity, JioDrive, JioTV, JioJoin and others.
4G Broadband: In the financial year 2016-17 the company will launch its 4G service. Earlier the company planned to release the service in December 2015, by were waiting for the official approval by the government. The owner of Jio said that the services include the voice and data service and some of the peripheral services like the live TV, digital payment platform, instant messaging, movie on demand, music streaming and news. They have fiber optic cable of about twenty five thousand kilometers in the country and have also partnered with the local cable operators so that they can offer a broader connectivity of their broadband service.
Since Jio has the MSO (multi service operator) license, they will offer television on demand service as a TV channel distributor on their network.
Jio net Wireless connection: Before the 4G internet and telephone service, the company started providing free Wi-Fi hotspot service in some of the cities in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Vijayawada, Meerut, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. And from March 2016 they have started offering free wireless connectivity for all the spectators of the Twenty20 World Cup, so the stadiums in Delhi, Kolkata, Punjab, Mumbai, Mohali, Bengaluru and Dharamshala have Wi-Fi connectivity.
